National Philanthropy Day 2014
I was again honoured to be asked to photograph the National Philanthropy Day event at The Fairmont Empress.
This year was an outpouring of emotion for everyone in the crowd when six-year-old Owen Kriegolson spoke about the fundraising campaign he started when his Poppa was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He spoke so eloquently about how he told his parents that instead of getting Christmas presents he wanted to donate the money to help find a cure. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
After hearing his moving story, Bruce Williams from CTV, who was emceeing the event had the great idea of auctioning off Owen’s autograph… for $500! I will tell you right now that that autograph will be worth thousands someday because with spirit like Owen’s the sky is the limit!
It is so inspiring to see young people being so selfless and giving. Jarod Waters, thirteen, also received a Youth in Philanthropy award for his exceptional deeds.
The Lieutenant Governor, Judith Guichon, gave a beautiful speech about the imortance of philanthropy in today's society.
Other notable honourees included:
Stephen Clark, who received the Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer Award.
The Generosity of Spirit Award went to Ed Chwyl and Family for their generosity and tireless efforts benefitting countless worthy causes.
The Outstanding Philanthropic Service Club Award honoured The Chemainus Health Care Auxiliary. With 170 active volunteers, the CHCA spreads goodwill to many charities in Chemainus and around Vancouver Island.
The Corporate Responsibility Award went to the amazing team at Tru Value Foods for giving back to their community through volunteer work and donating 1% of sales to local charities.
I am humbled and awed by all of the nominees. The world is a brighter place because of you!
